Free For All Tuesday - No. 317

So what questions or discussion points have you got for us today?

It is Tuesday after all so fire away.

27 February 2017

PlannerCon Europe Website is now live

Just the preliminary info is there at the moment.

They will be adding vendor, sponsor and other information over the next few weeks!

Work on the ticketing page will start next Monday and it will take about 3 weeks before it will be ready, so we're hoping to be able to tell you more about tickets and prices by the end of this month / beginning of April at latest.

A Date For Your Diary - 5th March 2017

We are going to run another conference round-table voice/video/text chat using Skype a little later than normal this month due to my travel commitments.

When? - Sunday 5 March at the following times:
  • London 10:00 am,
  • Paris 11:00 am,
  • Brisbane 8:00 pm time.
Additionally we will be on line later in the day at the following times:
  • Los Angeles 8:00 am,
  • Denver 9:00 am
  • Dallas 10:00 am,
  • New York 11:00am,
  • London 4:00 pm
  • Paris 5:00 pm etc.
The timing of these two sessions have been chosen to hopefully allow as many people to join in compared to previous round-tables.

Do not worry if you aren't available at the start of one of our sessions each one lasts 2-3 hours so pop up when you are available and say hello.

Where? - an on-line chat using Skype. with voice and video (if you wish)

What do I need? - just a micro-phone and some head phones(in ear phones work fine) and a free Skype account. Using headphones or earphone reduces 'echo' on the call. Video is optional, but a few of us will be on video as well.

Who - All of you... connect up with Philofaxy and we will attempt to get as many of us linked in to the audio conference as possible. Come and listen if you don't want to chat.  What do we talk about? Filofax stuff... but anything else as well. It's like long lost friends meeting up for coffee and a catch up.. but don't worry if you have never joined in before... you are an old friend too!

If you have any questions you want to ask then please let us know in the group or before we start.

How -
  1. Connect to Philofaxy by firstly searching for Philofaxy in Skype, I will then add you as a contact.
  2. Then  'Send Contact Request',  I will then add you in to the chat room.
  3. Then if you request it, I can add you to the audio conference as well. But if you just want to chat via keyboard that's fine. That way it's slightly less hectic for me!
Come and join in the fun, even if you only pop in to say hello... but don't be afraid to join in the discussion.

As with previous round-tables there will also be a parallel text chat room going at the same time as the voice conference, so you can listen to the voice chat and type if you wish, just mute your microphone in Skype

If you need any assistance setting up Skype, please pop a comment in this post and I will try and help you get one line. Skype is free for computer to computer calls....

Here is my post on how to improve your Skype audio with headphones or a headset.

Hope to be chatting with you on Sunday 5 March 2017.

Film Photography Recording Insert

As some of you might know I've been a keen amateur photographer for a number of years... decades even! For over 10 years now I've been using digital photography as my main method of capturing images. Prior to that and since being a teenager I have used film for all my photography.

Over the years I've owned a number of different film cameras, I still own a few of them from a Kodak Instamatic 25 camera to a more recent Canon EOS 30 Single Lens Reflex (SLR) film camera.

My use of film has dropped dramatically over time, but I have maintained an interest in it on an occasional basis.

Like a lot of other analogue things (planners included!) there has been a resurgence in people wanting to go back to using film photography, in the same way that there has been an increase in the number of LP vinyl records sold in the last few years.

I decided that this year I should do some more film photography. It is quite a challenge after using digital photography with the benefits of instantly being able to see your results.

To help with my understanding of the results of the pictures I hope to take this year I decided I needed to record the details of the photographs I take so I can look back and see the settings I had used.

One of the very first Filofax inserts I created/recreated was the Photography Exposure Record, I had some of these old Filofax inserts from the 1980's but they are no longer available.

Having used my own version I decided that there were a couple of things I could do to improve on the original version.

1980's Photo Exposure Record insert

Like the original I decided to do it in Personal size because this is very easy to carry around in my camera bag and it lends it self well for note taking whilst out and about. I also kept it in landscape format so that the rings don't get in the way, even less so in a slimline organiser. In the photos it is in a Holborn, but I also have a Finsbury which has smaller rings.

Original version at the top and the new version below

The reverse side is the same format, printed on to Filofax Plain paper
I'm sharing these inserts with you so if there any of you that are film photographers then you can use them too.

Photo Insert to be printed on Personal size paper: Word or PDF
Photo Insert to be printed on Personal on A4 sized paper: Word or PDF

Of course I could have used a smart phone app, or a simple notebook, but where is the fun in that!

Free For All Friday No 432 by Laurie

One of the many joys of using a Filofax or similar ring binder is being able to have other things in your planner besides just planner/ diary pages.

I have loads of random things in my Filofax. On my dividers I have taped post cards of my favorite locations (Glen Coe and Rannoch Moor). It's like taking a mini vacation every time I turn my pages!

I also have a printed page of photos of oystercatcher birds. I love these charming little birds. This time of year they come inland and nest in the fields around my house. I love their loud PEEP! call. Seeing them in my planner just makes me happy.

I like having fun things like these in my planner so it's not all business and to-dos.

What do you have in your ring binder that's there just for fun?

And as always on Fridays, feel free to ask and/ or discuss anything ring-binder related!

Comparing A5 Gillio Organisers

I recently bought a Gillio A5 Compagna and this then gave me the opportunity to compare all three models available from Gillio in their A5 organiser range hopefully this might help others decide which is the right model for them.

This is not intended to be a detailed review more a simple way of showing the key differences between the three models.

Top to bottom: Amica, Compagna, Mia Cara

Top to bottom: Amica, Compagna, Mia Cara

Amica A5
  • The lowest price of the three A5 models, prices for the A5 size currently (2017) start at: €352 (inc VAT)
  • Covers have stiffener and foam internally. This makes the Amica ideal if you are going to be writing in it away from a desk or flat surface as it has some structure. Organiser lays flat without any training straight out of the box.
  • No zip pockets only secretarial slip pockets.
  • Inside - left : 2 leather secretarial pockets for papers; 4 pockets for business cards and/or credit cards; 1 pocket for several business- and/or credit cards.
  • Inside – right: 3 secretarial pockets, 3 pockets for business cards and/or credit cards.
  • One pen loop.
  • 25 mm Rings which are replaceable.
  • Empty weight 495 grams
  • Takes true A5 size inserts with no issues.
  • Also available in Medium(Personal) Pocket and Mini sizes.
Compagna A5
  • The mid-price of the three models and I believe this is the most popular model. Prices for the A5 size start at: €390 (inc VAT)
  • No stiffener between the inner and outer layers of leather.
  • Heavier in weight than the Amica at 505 grams including the fly leaf
  • Full width back pocket, useful for A4 documents.
  • Comes with leather fly leaf, reverse side of this is a suede finish not the same colour leather as the organiser.
  • Inside - left: one secretarial pocket and one smaller pocket for storing papers; one compartment for several business- and / or credit cards; four business- and / or credit cards slots.
  • Inside - right: one secretarial pocket and one smaller pocket to store pieces of paper; zipper for coins/money or papers.
  • One pen loop.
  • 25 mm Rings which are replaceable.
  • Takes true A5 size inserts with no issues.
  • Also available in Medium(Personal) Slim, A6, Pocket and Mini sizes.
  • A6 model slightly different design to the others see review here. The A6 has a fly leaf with an additional pen loop. Something I believe should be included in the A5 design.
Mia Cara A5
  • The heavy weight in the line up, at 745 grams even when empty! Prices for the A5 size start at: €585 (inc VAT).
  • Two part design with a removable internal organiser section.
  • External outer jacket has no stiffener between the leather layers. The organiser section has stiffener between the layers of leather.
  • Full width back pocket in the outer jacket.
  • Inside - left (outside part): wallet (with popper button); zipped pocket; extra pocket to store papers.
  • Inside - left (organiser part): three credit and/or business card slots; one larger pocket.
  • Inside - right (outside part): six credit and/or business card slots
  • Also available in Medium(Personal) and Pocket sizes.
  • One pen slot in the central spine location of the outer jacket. I don't find this easy to use. I use a Filofax Flex fly leaf with a pen loop on the rings or a pair of them to give me two pen loops. If you are right handed retrieving the pen from the central pen slot is fiddly with the organiser section in place.
  • 25 mm Rings which are replaceable. Considering the overall weight of the Mia Cara, it deserves to have bigger rings. But there is a problem even with 25mm rings....
  • Please note that the organiser section was not designed for A5 inserts, it was designed for inserts that are 'Half Letter' size. These are narrower, so if you put A5 inserts in the organiser section you will find the pages are flush with the edge of the organiser section, if you use tabs these will stick out beyond the edge of the organiser section (see the photo below). Admittedly when the organiser section is inserted in the outer jacket this isn't such an issue. However, if like me you want to use the organiser section independently of the outer jacket, it is a major deal breaker for me with this model. It is even worse with 35mm rings fitted! (see the photo below)
Please note that the 'A5' inserts sold by Gillio are Half Letter size (140x216 mm) not true A5 in size (148x210mm).

The removable Mia Cara Organiser with true A5 inserts and dividers
The removeable Mia Cara Organiser with true A5 inserts when fitted with 35mm rings

Overall for me of the three models available in A5 size, the A5 Compagna suits my needs best, the issues with the Mia Cara with the width could be solved by Gillio and I have my own plans to solve these issues. Watch this space....

I am planning on having a VIP First-Class Lifestyle session at PlannerCon with a select few individuals. Space is limited to 15 people only! One person (that's one in 15 people) will have a chance to win a $200 Plannerology gift certificate to gain a planning session with me, either in person if you are local to the VA/DC area or via Skype.

Get your tickets here. This is an OFFICIAL Plannerology event.

There WILL be rare planners to sniff and pet!

After the success of setting up Plannerology in 2016, I've gotten a lot of private messages thanking me for inspiring members to create the lifestyle they have always dreamt of having. It's one thing to dream about living the life you want and another to actually define it and live it. In detail, crating order from chaos. This calls for creating all the first-class lifestyle space you can and removing all other obstacles. Living a first-class lifestyle takes courage and an open mind. There must be a willingness to accept more than one way of getting to the same destination.

That's why I decided to offer up this historic, (yes, I said historic) event. The first annual PlannerCon in San Francisco is already breaking multiple "first" moments with the sheer size and scale of the event along with the quality speakers (*ahem*) and vendors.

The magic that is created at Plannerology allows for small and permanent habit changes, allowing us to ease into our desired lifestyle with grace. Nothing is forced. We develop personal mission statements and yes, we will be doing activities to discover this elusive creature at the VIP session.

I have a slew of take aways for attendees, which by the way is limited to 15 people!! Any more than 15 and we lose the magic. One attendee is guaranteed to walk away with a $200.00 Plannerology Gift Certificate (that's a one in 15 chance of winning), for private session with me after PlannerCon.

Because the First-Class lifestyle is a mindset. we will work on setting the groundwork for that. How? Bring your planner, your pen and yourself to this special event being held on the 9th floor of the Grand Hyatt Hotel on PlannerCon eve! We will have a 1.5-hour guided session, away from the craziness, in a quiet setting where we can take our time and give ourselves a chance to breathe in what is important.

In this VIP Planning Session, you will be able to :

  1. Develop a Personal Mission Statement
  2. Defining goals that align with your purpose in life
  3. Ground yourself in your purpose or reigniting your passion for your purpose
  4. Use your planner as a playbook for your life
  5. Start taking control of all the moving bits around you
  6. Make choices that push you forward in your goal success
  7. Curate (edit) the parts of your life that don't serve you anymore
  8. Learn to establish routines to enhance your wellbeing
  9. Start creating a life purpose altogether yours
We will have classical music, a private, ambient and intimate setting. What better way to start off PlannerCon than a private, VIP session?! I welcome you to join me in leaving white space behind. Let's start filling the pages together.

Sunday Start Monthly Inserts

A few weeks ago I showed you all how you can create Sunday start weekly inserts. Today I'm going to dive in and show you to how to create Sunday Start Monthly inserts.

The process is similar, if anything slightly easier. Whilst I'm only covering Monthly inserts, the same principles will apply to changing any monthly calendar including the ones at the top of some of our weekly inserts.

Fortunately the change is only in the Word source document, you do not need to change anything in the Excel source document.

So starting with a conventional Monday Start Month on One Page:

In the Word source file if you toggle the preview in the mail merge tool you will see the merge fields as shown below:

To change this to Sunday Start you obviously need to move the header days across by one column and move Sunday to the start of the week.

You then need to move the merge fields for Sunday across to the start column but shifted down the table by a week. As follows:

Toggling the mail merge preview gives you the final result:

Once again can I emphasise that we have no intention of providing Sunday Start inserts in addition to Monday start ones at present. So if you really want Sunday Start inserts it is time to learn how to do the mail merge etc to be able to create your own inserts.

To help you get started, here are the source files I created for the screen shots above:

Free For All Friday - no. 431 by Anita

I have owned quite a few Filofaxes over the years, but tend to keep a pretty small collection as I usually sell one if I purchase a new one. This has enabled me to try out a good variety and I've realised that my preference is for older models in red, brown or black colour. I think that partly I like the layout and design of the vintage ones, but it's occurred to me recently that I also prefer owning something with a bit of character. It also needs to be in a darker colour, so that it doesn't show wear and tear so easily. As a recovering perfectionist, I can absolutely understand why someone would want to keep their binder in pristine condition by keeping it in a pouch, but for me personally trying to keep things like new just caused me stress. I think that nowadays I probably enjoy using them more as I'm not worried about damaging or marking them with use.

Do you keep your binders in a pouch, or do they get shoved into bags (like mine)?

And as always, as it's Friday please feel free to discuss anything organiser related.
Have a great weekend.
