Mini Size Organisers

I see quite a few people using Mini size organisers on Facebook and Instagram.

It is not a size I think I could practically use as an every day planner, but some manage it! Going down to Pocket size I think would be about as small as I would want to go.

Filofax stopped selling Mini size organisers a couple of years ago, they still sell the inserts though, which is ok I guess. There must be plenty of organisers available on places like Ebay and other on-line sites to enable people to be able to buy a Filofax organiser in that size.

I only have one Mini, a Filofax Malden, I previously had a red Finchley Mini, I also have a couple of M2's which are similar page size to the Mini but landscape and only 3 rings!

The Mini uses paper that is 67 x 105mm although some makers do vary the page size within a  centimetre of that size, so check the size of inserts before you buy them.

I have used the Malden Mini as a notebook, and used A7 size paper in it which is a few millimetres wider than Filofax Mini size.

Filofax Mini Malden
The Mini next to a Pocket for size comparison!

So what do you do if you can't find a used Mini organiser? Well there are a few other manufacturers that still sell that size new.

Gillio
Gillio offer the following models in Mini size: Amica, Compagna and the Mia Cara. They all come with 12mm rings. The Mia Cara overall about the size of a pocket size compagna!

The 12 mm rings are the ones I've mentioned before that are only held in with small metal tabs at each end of the ring mechanism. Prices are between €125-€224 plus VAT if you are in Europe.

All three Gillio models use the same ring spacing as Filofax Mini, which of course is an advantage.

Succes
Succes offer their own range of Mini size organisers and inserts.

However you should be aware that the ring spacing on the Succes organisers is not the same as Filofax Mini organisers.

This drawing shows the difference.

Fortunately there is a punch available from this site. Although there is a slightly cheaper solution on Amazon with this punch below.

The punch blocks on this punch are adjustable so you can easily reset them to the required spacing. I bought this punch myself for use with a Deskfax and wrote about it here.

Unlike the Deskfax using this punch with the Succes/Van der Spek Mini, doesn't need the punch to be modified, you just set the punch blocks to the correct setting as shown above and you will be able to use it. And you can use this punch for all sizes up to A5, by just adjusting the positioning of the punch blocks.

Van der Spek.
Van der Spek also offer their Custom range with the same ring spacing as Succes, so they can use their inserts and the same punch I have highlighted from Amazon.

Being part of the Van der Spek Custom range of course means a large range of leathers and you can add various options such as a second pen loop and a full width back pocket as well if you wish.

They are available with 15mm rings. The attachment method of the rings is the same as the others in the Van der Spek range, so they are both strong and secure.

Prices of the Van der Spek Mini start at a very reasonable €99 plus VAT if you are inside Europe.

I'm sure there are other brands around selling Mini size organisers still. But these are just a selection of what is available.

Are you on Instagram?

Are you on Instagram? I've been using it fairly actively for the last 18 months or so. There are a lot of Philofaxy readers on there and lots of photos of organisers and planners of all types.

I endeavour to post at least once a week on Instagram. Quite often the photos I post will also be used on Philofaxy.

I always try to keep my posts within the niche of ring bound planners. I have another account for bound, travellers notebooks etc (@TN_Times).

Free For All Friday No. 452 by Laurie

One of the things I love about using a Filofax binder is I can change the type of weekly pages I use as often as I want. I'm constantly looking for a page layout that will be the perfect balance of space for each day plus my task lists. I've bought pre-printed pages, designed my own and printed at home, and used custom pages. I looked through my storage binder from last year and discovered I used 9 different types of weekly pages throughout the year!

In case you were wondering, I didn't re-write all of my dates and events all year! I use monthly pages for all forward planning and only fill in my weekly pages one month in advance, so the most I ever have to re-write is a couple of weeks.

How often do you change the type of diary/ planner pages you use?

And as always on Fridays, feel free to discuss and/or ask anything ring-binder related!

Filofax Holborn Comparisons

The Filofax Holborn is another favourite of mine, the interior design hits all the right spots for me. But there are some interesting differences between the clasp models and the zip models.

So first of all let us look at the Personal size here in brown in Zip and in black for the regular clasp model.

Externally they have used a similar styling. The Zip model has a useful outside slip pocket which you can use to put papers or a smart phone in. Naturally the physical size of the zip model is bigger than the clasp model.

Unzipping the Holborn Zip Personal, it has the same size rings as the clasp model. As you can see in the photo it doesn't quite lay flat. Both only have a single pen loop. Oddly the Zip has 7 card slots, the clasp only 6 card slots.

Now look at the two photos and note where I have slotted the Philofaxy cards in. On the clasp model you effectively have too additional slip pockets that aren't present on the zip model.

Both have an additional zip pocket on the inside back cover.

Of the two formats I've used the clasp on more than the zip model. However I like them both equally.

Looking now at the A5 Holborn. Again I have the zip in brown and the clasp in black. There are a few more differences in this size.

Once again the zip has a slip pocket on the front cover.

Opening up them both. The A5 Zip does lay flat with no training. The A5 Zip has 30mm rings where as the clasp A5 only has 25mm rings. The Zip gains an extra pen loop on the inside front cover as well.

Both have 5 credit card slots. Again they have the same pocket arrangement as the personal size with the zip loosing the inside slip pockets again shown by my business cards.

With the clasp model only having 25mm rings it is quite compact for an A5 and I've found it great to carry around in my bag and use at my desk. With all of those pockets it can hold lots of additional paperwork. I've used the A5 Zip for several trips where the zip closure offers additional security to prevent things falling out of your organiser.

The Filofax Holborn continues to be available in Pocket, Personal, Personal Compact and A5 sizes and at the time of writing in Black and Brown colours.

In the past the Holborn was also released in Wine and Grey colours, it appears they have discontinued the Zip models.

Overall the Holborn is a great organiser, the leather is soft and supple. The clasp models have stiffener between the interior and exterior leather. The Zip models do as well, but it is thinner and less obvious.

If you can't pick one up new, I'm sure there are plenty around pre-owned. You can of course put in a Wanted advert on our own Ad-spot page.

You can find other posts about the Holborn range here.

Have you ever owned a Holborn?

What Are Clicking Knives?

If you have visited one of the manufacturers workshops such as Van der Spek, you will have seen 'Clicking Knives' in use.... but what are they?

Clicking Knives are used to cut out the leather components very precisely and repeatedly to the same dimensions and shapes, time and time again.

Whilst visiting Van der Spek we were shown the process they go through to make the individual components of a planner.

They use a cardboard frame to select the precise part of the hide for the outside cover and then use a template to hand-cut the leather, they then hand cut the interior parts in a similar way.

Then they gather together the 'clicking knives' for that particular model they are making and using a electrically powered press they cut out the parts using the Clicking Knives.

Once cut the parts are all gathered together to be assembled and sewn in to the finished article.

So let us look in to the Clicking Knives in more detail.

They are made from tool steel and the cutting side is sharpened like a knife.

Some of the Clicking Knives have a foam insert, this presses down the leather evenly so that it is flat when the knife cuts through the leather.

This is the cutting side. Note the foam insert on the right hand one.

This is the upper side.

Here are a sequence of photos showing the cutting of a part of an organiser.

The clicking knife is placed on the leather.

Once cut the wanted part is separated from the waste around it

These two parts are the upper and lower leather for the inside rear of the interior.
The vertical slot is for the pen loop
Here is a short video showing the press operation.

With 12 or more parts of leather in each organiser, the staff at Van der Spek are of course very experienced and although they could hand cut every single part of an organiser, by using the 'Clicking Knives' they can keep all the parts within very close measurement tolerances.

If they got one part wrong, the whole organiser might have to be reworked, which adds to costs and time etc.

Some custom designs will of course use all hand cut leather, or a mixture of hand cut and machine cut leather parts using the Clicking Knives.

Every item Van der Spek produce is finished to a very high standard and is backed by a life time warranty.

Thank you to Petra Van der Spek for responding to my questions and requests for this rather odd post!

What if.....

For some reason an idea came in to my head the other morning...
'What if you could recreate the Filofax Winchester'
The Winchester started life in the 1980's, it is considered to be the 'Classic' Filofax design. It was made in the thousands in England in leather. It is quite simple in its design, to some it is the perfect design.

It was only available in Personal size, but with a variety of ring sizes ¼"(6.4mm), ½" (12.7mm), 7/8" (22.2mm), 5/4" (31.75mm),  all measured in inches of course, and a variety of colours and leathers, some quite exotic leathers as well were included.

Despite the number of variations the basic design remained the same. The exterior is just a plain cover with a modest size clasp to hold the organiser closed.

The interior contains just four pockets. Here is a 'sketch' of the interior.

On the left hand inside cover you have an ID card pocket, above that another pocket and a full height pocket behind those two. On the right hand inside cover there is just a full height gusseted pocket.

On both sides there are flaps that cover the openings to the pockets, these flaps are wide and also act as 'ring protectors' These flaps also remain closed when the organiser is closed, this secures the internal contents without the need for any zips.

The leather interior and exterior is simply sewn together. The edges appear to be burnished and finished off with a Edge Kote type product to give a clean edge to the leather.

On the right hand inside cover there is also a single all leather pen loop.

So would I keep the design exactly the same? Having owned a Winchester for 30 years I think I would make some minor changes.
  • Consider offering it with a wider clasp, or if the same width then a concealed popper on the clasp.
  • Consider changing the pen loop to include an elasticated section, and possibly a second pen loop added to the left hand inside cover.
  • Now the difficult one, provision of credit card slots. I would say no, leave the pocket arrangement as it is. But offer a credit card holder that can be added as an accessory on the rings (Filofax also did this)
  • Another possible 'addition' to the original design, it could possibly have a full width back pocket added, although this will of course add to the bulk and weight of the organiser.
  • May be offer it in other sizes? A5 and Pocket... may be even an A6.
Here are a couple of photographs of my own Winchester I bought in 1986.

So should an updated version of the Winchester be created/manufactured? May be with a different name if it has a different design?

Let me know your thoughts in the comments below, I will take cover now !

Filofax model locations and other key places

Have you ever plotted all the locations that are used as Filofax Organiser model names on a map?

Such as in: Eton, Finchley, Finsbury, Guildford, Kendal, Lyndhurst, Winchester etc

I've put most of the model name locations on a Google Map I've also added some other key locations to the map as well.

I know people plan pub crawls around the London Underground using Google Maps... but a Filofax tour... that would be different!!

If there are any I've missed out please mention them in the comments below.

Thank you.
